## Is Canada Expensive?

Canada is expensive. The national averages — $53/day for backpackers, $92/day for digital nomads and $290/day for luxury travel — put it in the top tier of global destinations, and none of the 45 cities we price falls below $35 a day. The high cost lives in accommodation, transport, and labor-intensive services like restaurants, not in the food basics you might cook yourself.

The driver is structure. A population of 40 million spread over the world's second-largest country means long supply lines for everything from canned goods to hotel rooms. Wages are high, so any service — a hostel receptionist, a bus driver, a server — is paid enough that the cost lands on you. Tourism infrastructure exists but only in thin ribbons along the southern U.S. border and in a few resort clusters like Banff and Whistler, so when demand spikes (July and August), prices follow. The U.S. dollar buys about 35% more Canadian dollars, but that help disappears quickly at the till.

## How Much Does It Cost to Travel in Canada?

Among the 45 destinations, Kingston, Ontario sits at $35/day for backpackers — the cheapest published rate. The most expensive is the Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia at $90/day. That $55 gap comes down to supply and demand: Kingston has year-round hostels, two universities keeping services open all year, and a cheap bus link to Toronto and Montreal, while the Cabot Trail is a remote coastal drive with a handful of hostels and a season that runs from late June to early October.

Within those extremes, a budget traveller will realistically spend $55–75/day in the big cities, hostels and grocery stores. Add $10–20 on top if you hit the Rockies or the Maritimes. A mid-range traveller paying for private rooms, a few restaurant meals and a car rental should budget $120–180/day. For comfort — hotels in Banff or downtown Vancouver, guided tours and no budgeting — plan on $250–350/day, with the Cabot Trail and Whistler at the higher edge.

Note that these numbers are per person per day, and they include accommodation, food, transport and activities. The cheapest month is usually May or October, when hostel beds in Halifax or Montreal can drop to $40–60, but the national averages above hold all year.

## Best Time to Visit Canada

Canada's sweet spot for price is May and September–October, when most cities are thawed out but peak crowds haven't arrived. Hostel beds in Montreal, Toronto and Halifax drop to $40–60, and car rentals fall to $60–80/day outside the July–August block. May is cool in the east (8–15°C) but dry; September is often the best month for hiking, with 12–20°C and fewer bugs; October brings clear cold days and the beginning of fall colours.

Summer (June through August) is the most expensive, with Banff, Whistler and the Cabot Trail at peak rates. The Canada Day long weekend (July 1) spikes hotels from Niagara Falls to Vancouver; in late July and early August, Toronto's Caribana and Montreal's Just for Laughs can push downtown rooms to 50% premiums. Winter (December–March) is a different market: ski towns like Whistler and Banff charge luxury prices, while big cities like Toronto and Calgary are cheap — hostel beds drop to $40–50 and hotels run 20% below summer.

For most travellers, mid-September to mid-October is the actual value window: weather is still comfortable, summer crowds are gone, and many lodges near Lake Louise and Gros Morne cut rates by 20–30%.

## Getting Around Canada

Canada is a flying country. Domestic flights are the only realistic way to cover the distances between, say, Toronto and Vancouver (5.5 hours, $180–350 one-way on Air Canada or WestJet) or Montreal and Halifax (2 hours, $150–250). VIA Rail's Winnipeg–Toronto–Ottawa–Montreal corridor is scenic but slow — a Toronto–Montreal trip takes 4.5 hours and costs $80–140 for a seat, or $250+ for a berth on a long-distance train like the Canadian.

Long-distance buses fill the gaps in the populated south: Rider Express and FlixBus link Edmonton, Calgary, Kamloops and Vancouver for $50–90 between major stops; Maritime Bus runs from Halifax through Charlottetown to Fredericton for $40–80. For the east coast, BC Ferries charges about $40–80 per car for the 1.5-hour crossing from Vancouver to Victoria or Nanaimo, while Marine Atlantic's North Sydney to Port aux Basques sailing (16 hours) costs roughly $80 per adult plus your vehicle. Overland travel is not practical to Yellowknife, Whitehorse or Iqaluit — the last requires a flight, and the Yukon and NWT only connect by air except for the Alaska Highway drive.

A rental car is the way to do the Cabot Trail, Gaspe Peninsula or Lake Louise–Banff–Jasper loop. Rates start at $80–120/day, and fuel plus insurance pushes it to $150+ a day. For most trips, you'll fly into a hub, then rent a car locally.

## Visas, Money and Entry Rules for Canada

Most visitors from the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and the EU do not need a visa for stays up to 6 months. If you arrive by air, you need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) — a C$7 online application, usually approved in minutes. Some nationalities, including India, Pakistan and the Philippines, need a Temporary Resident Visa, so check the IRCC website well before booking.

Money is straightforward: Canadians use cards for almost everything, even a $3 coffee. The currency is the Canadian dollar (CAD), trading around 1.35 per US dollar in 2026. Bring a no-foreign-transaction-fee card; most banks charge 2.5% per swipe. ATMs charge C$3–6 per withdrawal, and airport or hotel desks give poor exchange rates, so it's better to withdraw from a bank machine. Tipping is expected: 15–20% at restaurants, C$2–3 per drink at bars, C$2–4 per night for housekeeping, and 10–15% for taxis.

One entry trap: a DUI or any driving-related criminal record can bar you from Canada, even with a valid visa. Border officers have broad discretion, and can refuse entry on 'security' or 'medical' grounds.
