## Is Fiji Expensive?

Yes, Fiji is an expensive country to travel by regional standards, and you will feel it most in the cost of food, transport and simple accommodation. The numbers on this page say it directly: a backpacker needs about $30 per day, which adds up to $900 a month, while a digital nomad spending $70 per day hits $2100 a month. Luxury travellers should budget around $350 per day, or $10500 per month.

That spread is not a marketing range; it reflects a real economy where almost everything on the table is imported. Fiji grows some root crops and tropical fruit, but dairy, wheat, fuel, vehicles, electronics and most manufactured goods arrive by ship or plane, and the import duties and freight costs are passed straight to you. Tourism infrastructure is thin outside Suva and Nadi, so competition does not push prices down. The Fijian dollar is pegged to a basket of currencies, which has kept it relatively stable, but your purchasing power depends on where you bank. Seasonality matters too: in the wet season (November to April) you can often find lower room rates, but you also risk cyclone interruptions.

## How Much Does It Cost to Travel in Fiji?

Because this site publishes only Suva, the cheapest and most expensive destination on this page are the same city. That does not mean there is no price variation — it means the variation is inside Suva and between Suva and the rest of Fiji. Within the capital, a dorm bed in a backpacker hostel costs about $12–15, a meal at a local curry house runs $5–8, and a bus ride across town is under $1. At the other extreme, a hotel room near the government district can cost $150–250 a night, and a dinner for two at a waterfront restaurant exceeds $80. The published averages anchor the range: a budget traveller can survive on $30 a day, a digital nomad on $70, and someone paying for luxury should expect $350 a day.

Outside Suva, prices climb further — island resorts charge a premium for logistics, and Fiji's outer island transport is a major cost driver. For a realistic daily budget, think $30–40 for budget travellers, $60–90 for mid-range, and $200–350 for comfort and luxury, with the $350 figure representing high-end resort stays.

## Best Time to Visit Fiji

The dry season from May to October is the classic window: clear skies, lower humidity, and less rain, but it is also the busiest and most expensive time. Room rates in Suva jump 20–30 percent in July and August, when school holidays bring domestic tourists and the Hibiscus Festival takes over the city. If you want lower prices, aim for the shoulder months of April and November, when the weather is still workable but the crowds have thinned. In April the wet season is ending, and in November it is starting — both can deliver stormy afternoons, but rooms often drop to 60 percent of peak rates.

The wet season from December to March offers the cheapest rates, but you trade that for humidity, heavy rain, and a real cyclone risk; travel insurance is essential. If your schedule is flexible, skip the Christmas–New Year period entirely, because accommodation in Suva is nearly full and prices double. For a remote worker, the best value is probably May or October: dry enough to be pleasant, but before the school holiday rush. Note that the peak season also means better weather for diving and island hopping, but you pay for it.

## Getting Around Fiji

The only destination this site covers is Suva, so transport advice really splits into two parts: getting from the airport to Suva and moving inside the capital. The international gateway is Nadi, on the opposite side of Viti Levu. Your options are the long-distance bus operated by Pacific Transport — about $8 and four hours on the Queens Road, or a shared van for around $15 and three hours. A private taxi costs $80–100 and takes two and a half hours.

Suva itself is walkable in the central grid, and the city bus network covers the suburbs at fares under $1. Taxis within town rarely exceed $5, and ride-hailing is not available. For inter-island travel — which this site does not price but you may attempt anyway — there are domestic flights from Suva's Nausori Airport to Taveuni and other islands, a ferry network, and charter boats. Overland travel beyond Suva is not practical because the island roads are winding and slow; the only major highway to the west is the Queens Road, and the Coral Coast route is scenic but adds time. If you plan to see the outer islands, build in a domestic flight or a ferry ride, and expect each leg to cost anywhere from $30 to $100.

## Visas, Money and Entry Rules for Fiji

Most visitors from the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and the EU enter Fiji without a visa for tourism stays of up to four months. You simply arrive and get a visitor permit stamped at immigration. The passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival, and you should expect to show proof of onward travel.

The currency is the Fijian dollar (FJD), not the USD; the exchange rate hovers around 2.2 FJD to 1 USD. Cards are accepted in Suva's hotels, restaurants, and larger supermarkets, but cash is still king in markets and small kiosks, and some shops add a 3% surcharge for card payments. ATMs are common in Suva, but they dispense in FJD and your bank will charge a foreign transaction fee; the ATM itself may add another fee.

Tipping is not expected — rounding up the bill is fine, but a 10% tip is not the norm. One catch: if you have been in certain African or South American countries, bring your yellow fever vaccination certificate; otherwise you may be asked for it on arrival. Also note that immigration enforces the four-month limit strictly, and overstaying is a serious offense with heavy fines.
