## Is Moldova Expensive?

Moldova is not an expensive destination, but it is not uniformly cheap either. The average backpacker spends $20 per day, or $600 per month; a digital nomad typically pays $44 per day, or $1,320 per month; and those who want comfort should expect about $141 per day, or $4,230 per month. The low baseline stems from the local wage level, where most workers earn $300–$400 a month. That means a meal in a workers' canteen costs $3–$5, a hostel bed $10–$12, and a minibus ride across town $0.50.

What inflates the bill is anything imported — electronics, fuel, specialized food — and any tourist-oriented service. There are few big hotel chains, so a genuinely nice room in Chisinau can cost $60–$80. The leu is stable, but it is not freely convertible abroad, so you'll rely on ATMs, which may charge fees. Seasonality matters: summer and early autumn are high season, with prices climbing during wine harvest and the October National Wine Day; winter brings discounts.

## How Much Does It Cost to Travel in Moldova?

The price gap inside Moldova is modest but visible. The cheapest destination we cover is Soroca, where a backpacker can live on $15 a day by taking a private room from a local, eating at markets, and using marshrutkas. The most expensive is Chisinau, at $25 a day backpacking, which reflects better hostels, international restaurants, and a nightlife scene. That spread is small in absolute terms, but it changes what you can do: in Soroca your $15 buys a bed, three meals, and a bus ride; in Chisinau, $25 pays for a dorm room, two sit-down meals, and a museum ticket.

For a budget traveller, plan on $15–$25 a day depending on whether you sleep in Soroca or Chisinau. Mid-range travellers — those wanting a private room, sit-down meals, and occasional taxis — should budget $30–$60 a day. Comfort travellers, meaning a better hotel, a car, and no counting of drinks, will land in the $70–$120 range. The luxury average of $141 a day is possible if you take the best suite in Chisinau and eat out every meal, but you would have to work at it.

## Best Time to Visit Moldova

The sweet spot is late May through June and September through mid-October, when daytime highs are in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius and the crowds have not yet arrived. July and August are hot (think 30°C) and busy with visitors from neighbouring countries, which pushes hostel rates in Chisinau up by a few dollars. Winter, from December to February, is cold and grey, but accommodation is materially cheaper, apart from the New Year and Orthodox Christmas period.

The single biggest price spike is the first weekend of October, when the National Wine Day festival fills every bed in Chisinau and shuttles run to the Cricova and Milestii Mici cellars. Book at least a month ahead if you plan to go. April and November are transitional: you get some fine days but also rain, and guesthouses will often negotiate rates because few visitors have arrived. For the cheapest trip, aim for a rain-free week in May or mid-September, when the grapes are ripening but the crowds have thinned.

## Getting Around Moldova

Getting between the four destinations here is easy by road. There are no practical domestic flights; distances are short and the longest hop, Chisinau–Soroca, is about 170 km. The workhorse is the marshrutka (minibus) from Chisinau's bus station. Chisinau to Orhei takes about an hour and costs $2–3; to Tiraspol, about two hours and $3–4; to Soroca, about three hours and $5–6. Buses to Tiraspol cross the border into the breakaway region, so have your passport ready; you go through Moldovan customs first, then Transnistrian.

Trains exist but are limited and slow; a daily Chisinau–Tiraspol service is more about curiosity than speed. Renting a car is practical and not costly — about $30–40 a day with fuel — but you need to factor in a $10–15 fee to cross the Transnistrian border and the fact that some rural roads are poorly marked. Driving yourself to Soroca lets you stop at the medieval fort and monasteries along the way. Within cities, walking is best; taxis are cheap, with a starting fare of about $1 and most short rides under $5. For a backpacker budget, the marshrutka remains the best value.

## Visas, Money and Entry Rules for Moldova

Most visitors — including EU citizens, Americans, Canadians, Brits, and Australians — enter Moldova visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. If you need a visa, apply at a Moldovan embassy; approval typically takes 10–15 days and requires proof of accommodation, a return ticket, and funds. The currency is the Moldovan leu (MDL). Cards are widely accepted in Chisinau shops and restaurants, but cash is king in smaller towns and rural areas. In Transnistria, the PMR ruble is the local currency, though most places also take lei.

ATMs are easy to find in Chisinau and Tiraspol but sparse elsewhere, so carry enough cash for market days. Tipping is not expected, but rounding up or leaving 10 percent in a restaurant is good manners. Watch for dynamic currency conversion at ATMs and card terminals, and always decline your home bank's exchange rate when offered, as it is worse than Visa/Mastercard's. There is no exit tax, but if you enter Transnistria and return to Moldova, you must pass through Moldovan customs again; it takes an extra 10–15 minutes. One thing that surprises people: a Transnistrian entry stamp can raise questions at other borders, so some travellers ask for a separate visa slip instead of the stamp.
