## Is Senegal Expensive?

Senegal is not a bargain by West African standards, but it is still far cheaper than Europe or North America. Nearly everything a traveler consumes — bottled water, fuel, wine, cheese — is imported, and the CFA franc is pegged to the euro, so currency swings will not suddenly turn the country into a bargain. Tourism is lightly developed, and most of it sits in the greater Dakar area, where competition is thin and prices are accordingly higher than rural Senegal.

On this site, the average backpacker spends $25 a day, which is $750 a month. That covers a dorm bed, street food for three meals, and the occasional shared taxi. Digital nomads average $70 a day, or $2,100 a month, which buys a decent apartment or a mid-range hotel with reliable wifi. Luxury travelers pay about $250 a day, or $7,500 a month, for a business hotel in the Plateau, a private driver, and upmarket seafood dinners. Unless you camp and cook everything yourself, you will likely land somewhere between the backpacker and nomad figures.

## How Much Does It Cost to Travel in Senegal?

This site publishes a single destination, Dakar, so the cheapest and most expensive covered places are literally the same city. Price variation is about travel style rather than geography. A hostel dorm in the Ouakam neighborhood runs about $10-12 a night, while a clean hotel room with air conditioning starts at $35-50. Street food like a proper cebujen (fish and rice) costs $3-5, and a sit-down restaurant meal with grilled fish runs $10-15.

That translates into a realistic daily budget of $25-30 for a backpacker, $50-70 for a mid-range traveler, and $150-250 for someone who wants a pool, a sea view and a generous evening meal. The luxury average on this site is $250 a day, which is easy to hit if you book a beachfront resort or a Plateau business hotel with a restaurant and a minibar. The gap between budget and luxury is not huge by global standards, but it matters a lot if you are staying for a month.

## Best Time to Visit Senegal

The main tourist season runs from November to May, when Dakar is cooler and rain-free. June through October is the wet season, with high humidity and a few violent storms, though mornings are often clear. The best value for money is actually in the shoulder months: October and early June, when rains are still intermittent, but hotels in Dakar often drop rates by 20-30 percent to fill rooms.

Price spikes are tied to events, not weather. The Dakar Biennale, held in even-numbered years, pushes up hotel rates in May and June. The Dakar International Forum in December and the annual Grand Magal de Touba, which shifts in the Islamic calendar, can also fill the city and drive up accommodation prices. If you want a quiet budget stay, avoid late December and the two weeks around Ramadan, when restaurants change hours.

For divers, note that water visibility drops during the wet season, so the best underwater trips are in January-March. There is no single 'cheap' month, but mid-October and early June offer a sweet spot: the weather is acceptable and you avoid the biggest crowds.

## Getting Around Senegal

The only destination on this site is Dakar, so the getting-around story is mostly about how you reach the capital and how you move inside it. The new Blaise Diagne International Airport sits about 40 km east of the city. A shuttle bus to the Plateau costs about 8,000 CFA ($13) and takes 45 minutes, while a metered taxi is 15,000-20,000 CFA ($25-33) — negotiate the price before you sit in the car.

Inside the city, you have three options: the cheap car rapides (a short ride is 300 CFA, about 50 cents), the more expensive but comfortable shared minibuses, and the ubiquitous orange taxis. A short taxi hop across the city runs 2,000-3,000 CFA ($3-5). Walking is doable in the main downtown area, though the heat and dust can be tiring. Ubers from local drivers, via Heetch, work in central Dakar and are slightly cheaper than street taxis.

If you want to leave the capital, there are no rail passenger services; you'd rely on bush taxis, intercity buses, or a domestic flight. A flight from Dakar to Cap Skirring costs about 70,000 CFA ($115) one way, and the bus to Saint-Louis around 5,000 CFA ($8). These are not part of the site's tracked destinations, but they give you an idea of regional costs.

## Visas, Money and Entry Rules for Senegal

Senegal's visa policy is generous for most Western travelers. Citizens of the United States, Canada, the European Union, and many African nations can enter visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism, though the rules shift occasionally. For U.S. citizens, the visa-free period is currently 90 days; some nationalities need an e-visa before arrival, and a few pay a small fee at the airport. Always check your own country's embassy page before booking.

The currency is the West African CFA franc (XOF), pegged to the euro at about 656 CFA per euro. In 2025-2026, the exchange rate hovers near 600-650 CFA per U.S. dollar, so a quick mental shortcut is 600 CFA to $1. Cash dominates: street stalls, markets, and most taxis do not take cards, and even in mainstream restaurants you may find the terminal is 'broken'. Carry enough small bills (1,000 and 2,000 CFA) for daily expenses.

ATMs are plentiful in Dakar, but they often limit withdrawals to 200,000 or 300,000 CFA per transaction, and bank fees pile up. Withdraw a larger sum once and use a card only at hotels or high-end restaurants. Tipping is 10 percent at nicer restaurants, small change for taxi drivers, and 1,000-2,000 CFA for porters. Also note: tap water is not safe to drink; budget for bottled water (about 500 CFA per liter).
