## Is Vietnam Expensive?

Is Vietnam expensive? For most travelers, no — it remains one of the best-value destinations in Asia. The site's averages show a backpacker spending about $21/day ($630/month), a digital nomad $52/day ($1,560/month), and a luxury traveler $247/day ($7,410/month). Those numbers hold because the domestic economy is cheap: street food, local beer, and public transport are priced for Vietnamese purchasing power, and a deep pool of guesthouses and hostels keeps accommodation competitive.

What pushes costs up are the things travelers often want from home — imported cheese, good coffee, craft cocktails, and Western-standard hotels. These carry a premium because they depend on imports and higher labor standards. Even so, Vietnam is cheaper than neighboring Thailand for most goods. The exception is Tet, the lunar new year, when millions of Vietnamese travel and accommodation prices spike sharply. Outside Tet, your daily costs will almost always land below the site's averages if you stick to local food and transport. Beyond that, staying flexible with your wants keeps the country astonishingly affordable.

## How Much Does It Cost to Travel in Vietnam?

How much does it cost to travel in Vietnam? The site publishes six destinations, and the spread is surprisingly narrow for backpackers: Hoi An is cheapest at $18/day, Nha Trang most expensive at $25/day. Hoi An's low cost reflects its compact center, dense guesthouse supply, and cheap street food; Nha Trang, a beach resort town, charges more for seaside rooms and tourist-priced seafood. Hanoi, Da Nang, Da Lat, and Ho Chi Minh City sit in between, all within a few dollars of the $21 national average.

For a realistic daily budget: backpackers should plan $18–25; a mid-range traveler comfortable with private rooms and occasional restaurants will spend $50–80; and someone who wants comfort, air-con, and a decent hotel rather than luxury should budget $150–250. The high ratings for Ho Chi Minh City among remote workers reflect solid internet (70 Mbps average) and a strong café scene, not necessarily higher costs — but it's worth paying a bit more for a quieter district.

## Best Time to Visit Vietnam

Vietnam is long and its climate runs from subtropical in the north to tropical in the south, so there is no single best time. The weather window that matters for prices is the dry season: November to April in the south, February to May in the north, and roughly February to August in the central coast. Peak tourist season, from December to March, brings higher flight and hotel prices, especially around Da Nang, Hoi An, and Nha Trang.

The shoulder months — September and October in the north and central regions, and April to May in the south — offer lower prices and decent weather. You'll trade some rain for fewer crowds and better deals. The one date to avoid is Tet, the lunar new year, usually late January or February. Accommodation can double, trains sell out, and many restaurants close for a week. If you want the lowest prices, travel in September or October, when you can get a private room in Hoi An for $15 or less.

## Getting Around Vietnam

Getting between Vietnam's published destinations is easiest by air. Domestic flights connect Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, and Nha Trang; a one-way ticket on VietJet or Bamboo Airways costs roughly $50–80 if booked two weeks ahead. The Hanoi–Da Nang flight is about 1h20; Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang is 1h15. Trains are slower but scenic: the Reunification Express runs the whole coast, and a hard sleeper from Hanoi to Da Nang costs about $60 and takes 15–17 hours. Buses are cheapest — a sleeper bus from Hanoi to Nha Trang can cost as little as $18 and takes 18 hours.

For specific hops: Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City is a two-hour flight, not a realistic overland trip unless you have a week. Da Nang to Hoi An is a 45-minute bus ride ($2); Da Nang to My Son is a half-day trip. Da Lat is a mountain town best reached by overnight bus from Nha Trang (5 hours, $8) or Ho Chi Minh City (7 hours, $12). Ferries are only relevant for island trips like Phu Quoc, which is not on this site's list.

## Visas, Money and Entry Rules for Vietnam

Most travelers to Vietnam need a visa. Citizens of the UK, US, Australia, and most European countries can apply for an e-visa online for $25–35, valid for 30 days and single-entry. Some nationalities get visa-free entry for 15 or 30 days, but rules change, so check current policy before booking. Your passport must be valid for at least six months and have a blank page.

The currency is the Vietnamese dong (VND); roughly 25,000 dong to the dollar in 2026. Cash dominates for street food, markets, and buses, but cards are widely accepted in restaurants, hotels, and shops in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. ATMs charge a fee of about $1–2 per withdrawal, and many banks limit you to 3 million dong ($120) per transaction. Always decline the ATM's exchange-rate conversion; that 'convenience' adds 3–5%. Tipping is not expected but rounding up a taxi fare or leaving 5–10% at a nicer restaurant is appreciated. Watch out for common entry traps: a passport with Israeli stamps will be rejected by several neighboring countries, so plan overland routes accordingly.
