Our methodology
How we estimate travel costs
Our figures are planning estimates, not live quotes. They are designed to make destinations comparable on the same basis and should be checked against current prices before booking.
What each daily budget includes
- Backpacker: shared or simple accommodation, inexpensive meals, public transport and low-cost activities.
- Digital nomad: private monthly accommodation converted to a daily rate, meals, local transport and a typical coworking allowance.
- Luxury: higher-end accommodation, comfortable transport, dining and paid experiences.
Flights to the destination, visas, travel insurance and unusually expensive tours are excluded unless a page explicitly says otherwise. All displayed budgets are per person in US dollars.
How estimates are produced
Destination estimates are assembled from travel-cost reference points including Numbeo, Budget Your Trip, Hostelworld and current accommodation price patterns. Automated checks enforce daily units, sensible ranges and the ordering backpacker ≤ nomad ≤ luxury. The figures remain estimates because prices vary by season, neighborhood, booking date and exchange rate.
Other destination data
- Weather: current conditions and forecasts come from WeatherAPI.com and can change throughout the day.
- Internet: speeds are observed or estimated destination-level values; a specific hotel, home or coworking space may differ substantially.
- Safety and travel-style scores: comparative planning indicators, not guarantees or official travel advice.
Freshness and corrections
Destination pages show their own data-update date when one is available. Weather can refresh more frequently than cost estimates. We do not silently present an estimate as a verified local quote, and we welcome corrections when a figure is materially wrong.
