Is Portugal Expensive?

Compared with Western Europe, Portugal is mid-range: a backpacker spends about $40 a day, a digital nomad $72, and a luxury traveller $217. These averages come from our three destinations โ€” Lisbon, Porto and Madeira โ€” and reflect prices for budget hostels, restaurant meals, transport and tours. The country isn't a bargain like Southeast Asia, but it's noticeably cheaper than France or the UK, mostly because local wages are lower and many everyday costs โ€” bread, wine, a coffee at a neighbourhood cafรฉ โ€” stay low.

The big reason costs climb is tourism. In central Lisbon and the Algarve (though the Algarve isn't a listed destination here), demand pushes up accommodation and restaurant prices, especially in summer. Imported goods, from electronics to certain foods, carry a premium because Portugal imports much of its energy and manufactured items. That's why you'll see $4-5 coffees in tourist zones and $2 in a local pastelaria. The dollar currently goes a long way โ€” about $1 = โ‚ฌ0.92 as of August 2026 โ€” which helps. Overall, you can travel comfortably on the numbers above if you plan, but if you stay only in Lisbon's centre in July, you'll blow past them.

How Much Does It Cost to Travel in Portugal?

The gap inside Portugal is real but not huge. Porto is the cheapest destination we track, with a backpacker day costing about $35; Lisbon runs $45. That $10 difference shows up in hostels (a dorm bed in Porto is often $15โ€“18, in Lisbon $20โ€“25), in a meal out, and in attractions. Madeira sits between the two on the mainland โ€” but note that getting there adds a round-trip flight, usually $60โ€“120 from Lisbon or Porto if booked ahead.

For a budget traveller, plan $35โ€“45 a day: a hostel bed, bakery breakfast, a lunchtime menu do dia, and walking tours. A mid-range traveller should budget $70โ€“90 a day for a private room, nicer restaurants, and the occasional Uber; that matches the site's digital-nomad average of $72. If you want comfort โ€” a three-star hotel, fine dining, a day trip by car โ€” expect $150โ€“200 a day, with the site's luxury average of $217 as the ceiling. Choose Porto to stretch funds; choose Lisbon if you want better infrastructure for remote work, as it scores 8.7/10.

Best Time to Visit Portugal

Summer, from mid-June to August, is the most expensive time. Lisbon and Porto fill with cruisers and stag parties, and hotel rates double or even triple. July and August also bring heat โ€” 30ยฐC or more โ€” and packed trams. If you want sun without the premium, aim for late May or September: still warm, fewer crowds, and you'll often find hotel prices 20โ€“30% lower than peak.

Winter is cheap and mild, though rainy, especially in the north. Madeira has a special draw in December for the New Year's fireworks, and its temperatures hover around 18โ€“20ยฐC, so that's a popular escape that lifts prices over the holidays. The true value window is Aprilโ€“June: spring flowers in Madeira, city festivals like Santo Antรณnio in Lisbon (12 June) and Sรฃo Joรฃo in Porto (23 June) bring celebrations and some accommodation spikes, but not the sustained August flood. If you're flexible, May and September are the sweet spot โ€” good weather, reasonable prices, and you can still swim in the Atlantic.

Getting Around Portugal

Getting between Lisbon and Porto is easy by train or bus. The Alfa Pendular takes about 2h45 and costs $20โ€“35 if you book a few weeks ahead; the slower Intercidades is cheaper. Buses from Rede Expressos or FlixBus run hourly, cost $10โ€“20, and take about 3.5 hours. If you rent a car, the A1 motorway connects the two in 3 hours, with tolls around $20 and fuel at roughly $2.10 a litre (so a compact car costs $50โ€“70 a day including rental and fuel).

For Madeira, you have to fly. From Lisbon it's a 1h35 flight on TAP, easyJet or Ryanair; fares start around $50 one-way if you book early, rising to $150 in summer. Ferries from the mainland to Madeira are rare and slow โ€” the occasional cargo ferry takes two or more days and is not a practical way to travel. Within Madeira, a car is almost essential; a daily rental costs $30โ€“50. For Portoโ€“Madeira, you'll likely connect via Lisbon, adding an extra 2โ€“3 hours. Overland from Porto to Madeira is impossible; it's an island.

Visas, Money and Entry Rules for Portugal

Portugal is in the Schengen Area. If you hold a US, UK, Canadian, Australian, or EU passport, you can visit for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. Other nationalities can often get an ETIAS-style authorisation once the scheme launches โ€” for now, most non-EU visitors just need a valid passport and a return ticket. Border officials occasionally ask for proof of funds or accommodation, so keep your booking confirmations handy.

The currency is the euro (โ‚ฌ). Cards are accepted almost everywhere, including at small pastelarias and on trams, but keep โ‚ฌ20โ€“50 cash for markets or rural spots. Tipping is not expected; round up to the nearest euro at a cafรฉ, and leave 5โ€“10% at a restaurant if service is good. Avoid airport and street-corner ATMs like Euronet, which charge high fees and poor rates; use a bank-run ATM (Millennium, Santander, Caixa) and check if your home bank charges a foreign fee. Also note that a few places โ€” like the Lisbon metro โ€” now only accept contactless card or your phone, not cash. And if you drive, carry your original licence, not a photocopy.
