The cultural capital of Maharashtra, Pune is a vibrant student city that stays green and cool in June. Its position near the Sahyadri mountains makes it the perfect base for monsoon trekking and weekend escapes.
Pune is often called the 'Oxford of the East' due to its massive student population, which translates to a very affordable and energetic scene for backpackers. In June, the surrounding hills turn neon green, and trekking to forts like Sinhagad becomes a local rite of passage. Most backpackers stay in the Koregaon Park area, which is full of leafy lanes, quirky cafes, and the famous Osho International Meditation Resort. While it's not a 'hostel' city in the traditional sense, the abundance of student-priced eateries and bars makes it easy to meet locals and stay on a budget. You can eat well for $10 a day. The vibe is intellectual, laid-back, and much less aggressive than Mumbai.
The most desirable area. Leafy, full of cafes, bars, and the Osho ashram. Very international vibe.
A more traditional residential area but very clean and safe. Popular with students.

Very safe; as a student-heavy city, it is liberal and generally welcoming to foreigners.
