Krabi is a paradise for adventurous backpackers, especially those into rock climbing and island hopping. Ao Nang is the main hub, full of social hostels and bars, where a bed costs about $10-12. However, for a true backpacker experience, many head to Railay Beach (accessible only by boat) or Tonsai—the latter being a legendary, rugged base for climbers. In June, being the monsoon season, the boat trips are cheaper, though the sea can be choppy. You can save money by eating at the Ao Nang night market and sticking to local 'longtail' boats via shared transfers. Free activities include climbing the 1,237 steps of Tiger Cave Temple for a panoramic view. A daily budget of $32 is enough for a hostel, a day trip to an island, and good local food.
