Jakarta is a challenging but rewarding city for backpackers. It's not a typical tourist town, so you'll get a more 'real' experience of Indonesian urban life. Hostels are limited but concentrated in the Jalan Jaksa area, though many backpackers now prefer boutique hostels in South Jakarta. A bed costs $10-15. Food is the highlight for budget travelers; the city is a melting pot of every Indonesian cuisine, with 'Warung Tegal' (Warteg) offering massive meals for $2. The main expense will be getting around; the TransJakarta busway is very cheap ($0.25), but the city is huge. Use the MRT for speed where possible. A budget of $32/day covers basic accommodation, lots of great street food, and plenty of exploration of the Kota Tua (Old Town) and various museums. It's a great place to see the 'real' Indonesia before heading to the islands.
